With a strong focus on bespoke residential styling, Melbourne-based interior designer Sally Caroline, director of her namesake firm, curates spaces tailored to the daily rituals of its inhabitants, offering thoughtful and personalised designs.

When tasked with the transformation of an Amsterdam residence for a family of four, Sally Caroline prioritised vibrant colours and lively spaces. Overlooking the picturesque Vondelpark, her reimagined Dutch Quarter spans 382 square metres across four stories, originally dating back to 1899. The home features three bedrooms, four bathrooms, two powder rooms, a study, and expansive living areas, complemented by a generous back garden and rooftop terrace.

The owners, valuing individuality, granted Sally Caroline the creative freedom to weave a whimsical tapestry of uniqueness, adorned with captivating curiosities and bespoke pieces throughout the house. Combining new and vintage items, Sally capitalised on the property’s location, incorporating locally crafted Dutch artisan objects while benefiting from shorter lead times for acquisitions.

Tasked with infusing vibrant colours and lively spaces into this heritage home, Sally aimed to evoke joy and curiosity. Keeping the client’s creative freedom in mind, custom-made tufted rugs were designed for multiple spaces including a bedroom, living room and music room.

Each rug was meticulously designed to complement its surroundings and the objects within, creating a harmonious rhythm. Crafted by our Portuguese rug maker with botanical silk, the rugs have a shimmering quality that enhances their minimalist yet lively design. The contrasting borders effectively frame the spaces, while the vibrant colours echo those of the furniture, art and objects of the same hues, accentuating the overall playfulness. As you move through the rooms, the unique design of each rug stands out, tying together the eclectic elements of the home.

“Walking into our finished home for the first time was the most incredible experience. We were overseas while the team had everything put in place, we came home to find each room so beautifully put together – and a few little surprises from SC that our girls loved. There are so many unique pieces here – and I love how it has all been put together – its calm but colourful, feels a little like a luxury hotel but a lot like home. It feels like us, we all love living here”
