Frequently Asked Questions

CAN I HAVE A RUG MADE TO A CUSTOM SIZE?

Yes, most of our rugs can be made to any size. They are priced simply per square meter – in most cases there is no surcharge for a custom-sized piece. The maximum width of our custom-made rugs do vary however, as it depends on the width of the loom required to make each style. If there is a one-off rug from our Moroccan, Vintage and Classic collection that you like but is not the size you require, we might be able to source something similar in your ideal size.

CAN I HAVE A RUG MADE TO A SPECIFIC DESIGN?

We offer a fully bespoke service for rugs and carpets spanning across private and commercial applications.  You are welcome to come to us with a design in mind or we can work with you using colour references, fabrics and other finishes to build a concept. Using premium natural fibres and the skills of our experienced craftspeople, we can guide you through the diversity of styles and techniques available to create a truly unique piece for your space.

WHAT IS THE LEAD TIME FOR A CUSTOM MADE RUG?

Lead times vary depending on the style and size of the rug. Most of our hand-woven options will take approximately 16 weeks from order. The process involves our European makers preparing and dyeing the yarn to your specified colour, weaving the rug by hand, and assessing each piece as per their rigorous quality control. Hand-knotted rugs can take longer to make as the production process is much more labour intensive, approximately 16-20 weeks from order depending on the size required. If you are working to a particular lead time please contact us for in-stock or quick lead time products.

CAN I HAVE A SAMPLE?

We are pleased to offer sample loans so you may try these products in your home or studio against other finishes. Please note that we do not carry samples of our entire range as it is highly customisable but we can generally provide you with some good references. We do not have samples of one-off pieces from our Moroccan and Vintage collections, however, if you are based in Melbourne, we offer free in-home rug trials of all in-stock rugs.

For bespoke rugs and custom made designs, a digital rendering and a strike-off sample would be created for your approval prior to production.

DO YOU HAVE ANY RUGS IN STOCK?

Our Melbourne showroom has over 400 rugs in stock available for purchase. If you are based in Melbourne, we offer overnight in-home trials of all our in-stock rugs. We can also coordinate interstate rug trials for a small fee.

DO YOU REQUIRE A DEPOSIT?

Yes, we require a 50% deposit to confirm all custom rug and carpet orders. The balance is payable before collection or delivery and installation. Please see our full terms and conditions for further information.

DO YOUR RUGS HAVE A WARRANTY?

We offer a two year domestic warranty on our loose rugs following proper use. Our wall-to-wall carpets generally carry a manufacturer wear warranty between 5-15 years. Please view our full Terms & Conditions/ Warranty document for more information.

DO YOU WORK WITH INTERSTATE / OVERSEAS CUSTOMERS?

We regularly work with both interstate and overseas customers. We are able to discuss your project with you either via email or over the phone to help narrow down selections initially. We then have a wide range of samples available for loan that we can post to you before order confirmation so you can see and feel the texture and colour in real life.

DO YOU SHIP INTERNATIONALLY?

Yes, we can ship our rugs worldwide! Please contact us for a quote for shipping to your location. If you are interested in our wall-to-wall carpets for a project outside Australia please contact us to discuss in more detail.

WHAT PAYMENT METHODS DO YOU ACCEPT?

We accept payment by direct deposit and credit card. There is no surcharge for Visa and Mastercard, a 1.5% surcharge applies for AMEX purchases. We can also offer layby on our in stock pieces.

DO I HAVE TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO VISIT YOUR SHOWROOM?

Our showroom is open to both trade and retail clients Monday-Friday 9:30am-5:30pm and Saturdays 10am-5:00pm. You don’t need to make an appointment, just pop in!

If you require more specialised assistance, feel free to let us know of your visit ahead of time.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN THAT A RUG IS REVERSIBLE?

Most of our European textured rugs are hand-woven in a way that means they’re identical front and back. A reversible rug allows use of both sides, which will even out wear and ensure a longer life for your rug. They’re a great option for high-traffic areas, and an added bonus is that they’re somewhat self-cleaning. Each time you flip the rug, fine dirt and dust that your weekly vacuum doesn’t catch will be naturally massaged out of the rug with use on the reverse side.

HOW CAN I CLEAN MY RUG?

We recommend that you vacuum your rug at least once a week using a smooth head without any brushes or beaters. If your rug is reversible, flip and rotate the rug every 6 months (or more frequently if you are noticing any signs of wear) and for single-sided rugs, simply rotate every 6 months. Please download our full care and maintenance guide which contains general and detailed advice on specific products within our range.

ARE SOME RUGS MORE SUITABLE FOR HIGH TRAFFIC AREAS?

Consider the material, the construction style and maintenance advice for high traffic areas. Pure wool is very durable and easy to clean. Lower pile rugs are generally more suitable than very chunky textures or high pile rugs.

We often recommend our hand-woven textures for family living spaces as many of these are also reversible so you can completely flip the rug over to help even outwear. Hand-knotted wool rugs are also very durable and often intended to last a lifetime. Hand-tufted rugs in lower pile heights and more robust materials are also great for high traffic areas. Our team is able to assist you with choosing the right rug depending on the application and foot traffic.

We do not use viscose in our rugs as this is a temperamental fibre which is often damaged beyond repair once wet.

WHERE ARE YOUR RUGS MADE?

Our rugs are made all over the world, across Europe from Portugal to Italy, and further East to Afghanistan and Nepal. Many of our manufacturers established their weaving workshops over 50 years ago and to this day use traditional techniques and practices.

ARE YOUR RUGS FAIR TRADE AND CHILD-LABOUR FREE?

Sadly in some countries across the Middle East and Asia, unsafe working conditions, exploitation and child labour are still commonplace in the textiles industry. We are committed to supporting our manufacturers who look after their weavers and operate under fair work conditions. While many of our manufacturers are formally accredited by different organisations such as STEP, Fair Trade and Good Weave, we’re also proud to support manufacturers that are going to extra effort within their community. For example, our manufacturer of the Amadi collection employs an entirely female workforce in Kabul, Afghanistan where opportunities for women are rare. They also offer daily literacy classes as well as safe transport to and from the workshop.

WHAT ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY?

Halcyon Lake is continually working to minimise the environmental impact of our production and transport of rugs and carpets.

Using the best quality materials available is a large part of the durability and lifespan of a rug, along with the construction method. A high quality construction method such as hand-knotted or hand-woven eliminates the need for glues/synthetic materials. We also have a selection of wall-to-wall carpet that is available with a jute or felted wool backing, instead of a standard synthetic action backing or latex. Avoiding the use of glues/plastics/other synthetic materials means the carpet and rugs are fully biodegradable once the product reaches the end of its lifespan.

By custom making our rugs and carpets to order we are able to achieve minimal waste in production – any leftover materials are then made into sample pieces. Our rugs and carpets are made in a way that means they can usually be repaired and in some cases resized, should the rug need to be used in another application.

We prioritise using renewable materials in our products, primarily pure new wool, cotton and jute and occasionally other plant fibers like bamboo, linen and sisal all of which are sustainable, biodegradable and naturally renewable products.

The majority of our hand-woven textures are fully reversible, this means these rugs can be flipped and rotated to allow for even wear across the rug and increase their lifespan.

We also offer a selection of rugs that include recycled or reused materials. Vintage Moroccan rugs, Vintage Tuareg rugs and Vintage Overdyed rugs are all genuinely old pieces that have been cleaned and repaired using like-materials and traditional techniques. In the case of the overdyed rugs, they are given a new life with a coloured dye wash.

Working with our artisan makers and local transport agents, we endeavor to use recyclable packaging and transport methods. This includes transporting rugs and carpets by sea freight to reduce emissions when client lead times allow.

WHAT CARPET IS BEST FOR ASTHMA / ALLERGY SUFFERERS?

For allergy and asthma sufferers, the critical issue is the amount of dust and allergens present in the air. In the past, carpet has been unfairly singled out for its alleged association with dust and allergies. A major study by the German Allergy and Asthma Society found that wall-to-wall carpet reduces dust in the air by 50% of that found above hard flooring surfaces. (Source: Carpet Institute Australia)

The yarn used in many of our wool carpets is from New Zealand. The high lanolin content of the New Zealand wool naturally inhibits mould, bacteria and dust mite growth which is particularly good for Asthma sufferers. We also have a range of high performance nylon carpets which are a great hypoallergenic option.

The type of underlay your carpet is installed on can also help, we recommend Dunlop Springtred Supreme. With antimicrobial properties, it reduces mould, mildew and bacteria helping to protect against allergies and asthma attacks. Other benefits include reduced noise transfer and improved acoustics between floors, outstanding thermal insulation properties and its 100% recyclable composition.

Regardless of which underlay you use, weekly maintenance of any carpets or rugs is essential using a vacuum with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter.

CAN I HAVE MY RUG ALTERED OR REPAIRED?

Please contact us to discuss any repairs or alterations required. We recommend only working with workrooms who are experienced with handmade rugs as improper treatment can damage the structure of some rugs beyond repair.

Depending on the construction of your rug, it may be possible to alter the size of your rug if you are thinking of moving it to a different space or when moving house. Some rugs are much easier to alter than others.

HOW DO I KNOW HOW MUCH CARPET TO ORDER?

This can be challenging as carpet needs to be worked out based on the roll width of your selected carpet and how it will be installed depending on the size and layout of your space. You will need to allow for some wastage instead of the net square metres.

We can work out indicative quantities from a supplied scale floor plan. Quantities are finalised during a physical check measure by the installer when any other site requirements are also confirmed. It is best to allow 10-15% variation from initial quotes to final measures.

DO YOU OFFER CARPET INSTALLATION?

Yes, we have a contracted carpet installation team who can install across Metro Melbourne and some regional areas. We also have a network of installers we can recommend across most other states.

You are also welcome to work with your own nominated installer. In this instance, your installer will calculate the quantities required.

CAN YOUR RUGS BE INSET?

Yes, some of our rugs can be inset. Typically, products with a backing work best for this sort of application as opposed to hand-woven options which can expand and contract over time. Please contact us for further information on suitability for your project.

DO I NEED UNDERLAY FOR MY RUG?

We recommend and can supply high-quality, non-slip underlay to assist with maintenance and wear while also reducing slippage of your rug. The underlay is separate to your rug so reversible rugs can still be flipped and rotated. Underlay also allows for easier vacuuming.
