Uilas Lavender Small

Designed by Mae Engelgeer, the Uilas collection takes inspiration from the landscape of the Colombian province of Huila. Referencing the interaction of two forces of nature: the river Rio Magdalena and the rough desert of Tatacoa in which the river flows through. In this collection, the use of natural sisal and the irregular edges of each rug represent the heavily eroded landscape found in the Tatacoa desert while the colourful wool stripes are reminiscent of the river running through the valley.
Mae Engelgeer’s interpretation of this region in the south of Colombia captures the richness of life, colour and texture that can be found in the meeting of two dramatically different elements.

About the designer

Mae Engelgeer

Dutch textile designer Mae Engelgeer attended the Amsterdam Fashion Institute where she specialised in textile design, graduating in 2004. Later she was accepted to the prestigious Master Course in Applied Arts at the Sandberg Institute where she developed her first collection of textiles.

In 2014, Engelgeer opened her own studio in Amsterdam, working on product design and development, installations, and international collaborations. Mae Engelgeer’s work is characterised by a typical use of colour, geometric shapes and linear elements which is unmistakably hers. Her style has an open character that could be described as minimalistic with a playful twist. She cleverly combines craft, new technology and materials into beautiful textiles that enrich any home, without compromising on refinement or quality.
