Nobsa Rose / Ochre

Meaning ‘the valley retreat of noble weavers’ in an ancient, indigenous language, Nobsa, in north Colombia, is also renowned for its wool industry. NOBSA is manufactured here from pure wool on horizontal looms, by hand, in a small family business.

Designed by Sebastian Herkner, NOBSA has an elongated centre, creating the effect of a smaller rug lying atop a larger one. The choice of colours, coupled with a particular technique of weaving in different directions, lends NOBSA its individual character. With hand-finished edges, the rugs come in three sizes and seven colourways.

About the designer

Sebastian Herkner

Award-winning German designer Sebastian Herkner studied product design at the HfG Offenbach Am Main (Offenbach’s University of Art and Design) where his focus was already on designing objects and furniture. Herkner’s work often merges various cultural contexts, combining new technologies with traditional craftsmanship in order to highlight the multifaceted beauty of materials and draw renewed attention to small details.

Alongside Ames’ Managing Director, Ana Maria Calderòn Kayser, Sebastian travelled through Colombia in 2015 exploring the local landscape, communities, and historic landmarks. With a deepened understanding of the country’s people and background he created several rug designs, collaborating with local weaving workshops to produce the rugs in the land which inspired them.
