The Subas collection combines the art of knotting and weaving across four unique designs. The master craftswoman who directs the team of the small workshop in the Suba district of Bogotá comes from a family in the province of Boyaca in the Colombian Andes. This family has been using sheep’s wool for generations and has a rich history in handmade rug making. Award winning designer Sebastian Herkner created the Subas collection after witnessing the various weaving and knotting techniques while visiting the family’s workshop in Colombia. The various shades of the natural wool also inspired him, combining geometric shapes, relief effects and textured monochrome areas with great effect.

Subas is available in three sizes and five variations Moton, Oruga, Karo, Linea 1 and Linea 2.

About the designer

Sebastian Herkner

Award-winning German designer Sebastian Herkner studied product design at the HfG Offenbach Am Main (Offenbach’s University of Art and Design) where his focus was already on designing objects and furniture. Herkner’s work often merges various cultural contexts, combining new technologies with traditional craftsmanship in order to highlight the multifaceted beauty of materials and draw renewed attention to small details.

Alongside Ames’ Managing Director, Ana Maria Calderòn Kayser, Sebastian travelled through Colombia in 2015 exploring the local landscape, communities, and historic landmarks. With a deepened understanding of the country’s people and background he created several rug designs, collaborating with local weaving workshops to produce the rugs in the land which inspired them.
