Zipa Brown Blue Small | Large

Inspired by a journey through the Colombian Andes, the Zipa collection merges culture and craftsmanship. Designed by Sebastian Herkner, Zipa is woven by hand from pure virgin wool in a small weaving workshop in Cajicá, a town north of Bogotá known for its wool processing techniques. There, artisans use vertical looms and time-honoured techniques to craft these rugs.

The unique patterns and shapes of Zipa were inspired by a visit to the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá, situated 200 meters below a mountain in former salt mine tunnels. The cathedral’s walls, adorned with religious carvings, were dramatically lit, casting colorful reflections that sparked the creativity behind the collection’s design.

About the designer

Sebastian Herkner

Poetic compositions, refined shapes, and delicate surfaces mark Sebastian Herkner’s designs. He founded his Offenbach am Main based studio in 2006, creating furniture, lighting, installations and textiles; frequently showcasing the merger of contemporary techniques and traditional craftsmanship.

Alongside Ames’ Managing Director, Ana María Calderón Kayser, Sebastian travelled through Colombia in 2015 exploring the local landscape, communities, and historic landmarks. With a deepened understanding of the country’s people and background he created the Nobsa and Nudo designs, collaborating with local weaving workshops to produce the rugs in the land which inspired them.
