Zipa Brown Blue Medium

Inspired by a journey through the Colombian Andes, the Zipa collection combines rich cultural heritage with skilled craftsmanship. Designed by Sebastian Herkner, each Zipa rug is meticulously handwoven from pure virgin wool in a small workshop in Cajicá, a town renowned for its traditional wool processing techniques. Using vertical looms, artisans employ age-old methods to bring these unique pieces to life.

The collection’s distinct patterns and forms draw inspiration from a visit to the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá, located 200 meters beneath a mountain within the tunnels of a former salt mine. The cathedral’s walls, illuminated by dramatic lighting and adorned with intricate carvings, cast vibrant reflections that fueled the creativity behind the Zipa designs.

About the designer

Sebastian Herkner

Poetic compositions, refined shapes, and delicate surfaces mark Sebastian Herkner’s designs. He founded his Offenbach am Main based studio in 2006, creating furniture, lighting, installations and textiles; frequently showcasing the merger of contemporary techniques and traditional craftsmanship.

Alongside Ames’ Managing Director, Ana María Calderón Kayser, Sebastian travelled through Colombia in 2015 exploring the local landscape, communities, and historic landmarks. With a deepened understanding of the country’s people and background he created the Nobsa and Nudo designs, collaborating with local weaving workshops to produce the rugs in the land which inspired them.
